Description

The European Ocean Pact is a pledge and urgent call to unite for the ocean's protection and responsible management. It seeks to enhance international cooperation, support sustainable ocean economies, and encourage fair, science-based ocean governance for both present and future generations. This high-level meeting will provide an opportunity for meaningful discussions, setting clear commitments, and outlining practical next steps. Presented by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the Pact serves as a rallying point for those who believe the health of our planet and coastal communities relies on a thriving ocean.
The event will be held in-person. Attendance to the event is reserved to those accredited to the UN Ocean Conference Blue Zone.
Side events organised in connection with the 2025 UN Ocean Conference by Member States, the UN system, Intergovernmental Organisations and accredited non-governmental stakeholders are the opportunity for all participants to share knowledge and solutions to accelerate implementation of SDG 14, identify new and emerging issues, exchange national and local experiences and practices, and showcase the pledged voluntary commitments.
The EU and its Member States are strong supporters of the UN Ocean Conference process, having played an active and prominent role also at the first two editions of the conference held in 2017 and 2022. You can read more about the EU’s participation and the pledged voluntary commitments in 2017 and 2022.
At the third UN Ocean Conference, the EU and its Member States will announce 57 new commitments covering a very wide range of topics and regions around the world, amounting to nearly €1 billion.
